REVISED I-9 FORM AND INSTRUCTIONS HAVE BEEN ISSUED BY USCIS THAT EMPLOYERS MUST BEGIN USING BY MAY 7, 2013

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a revised I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form that employers must begin using by May 7, 2013. The new form must be used to comply with the employer’s obligation to verify the identity and eligibility to work in the US of all new hires. The new form must also be used when an employer is required to re-verify the employment eligibility of a current employee. A new set of Instructions for employers and employees to use in completing the I-9 form has also been issued. Both the new I-9 form and the Instructions have been expanded, reformatted and the wording clarified.

The new I-9 form and accompanying Instructions can be obtained on the USCIS website, www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf . A sixty five page HANDBOOK FOR EMPLOYERS: Guidance for Completing Form I-9 also appears on the USCIS website. The Handbook contains detailed information about using the new I-9 form, including a section of commonly asked Questions and Answers.
